Obituary: John M. Brooks

John M. Brooks was born on November 9, 1938, and passed away on April 12, 2026. John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he worked on fighter jets. His service came at a cost, as he lost much of his hearing while working around military aircraft.

He was an extremely loving father who loved and honored his daughter as a person. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and the depth of his heart. Throughout his life, John worked as a butcher, an antiques dealer, and a landscaper. Later, while helping care for the ranch of his friend, R. Baker, he returned to butcher’s work. He was also a talented writer whose compassion and thoughtful spirit were reflected in both his words and the way he treated others.

Later in life, John became a member of the United Methodist Church. He was also a proud member of the American Legion. John found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved writing, reading, taking nature hikes, and sitting on his porch watching the world go by. Those quiet moments reflected the thoughtful and gentle person he was.

John is survived by his daughter, Kendra M. Brooks; his brother, Don Brooks; his sister, Mary Cato; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory. John will be remembered not only for his hard work and service to his country, but also for the love, dignity, and respect he showed to those closest to him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial service for John will be held July 25, 11:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church of Brackettville.
