Garett Martin to Graduate Army Infantry Training During America’s 250th Birthday Week

by KCP

Garett Martin, son of Ashley and Brian Collier, will mark a major milestone this week as he graduates from Army One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia, during the same week the nation celebrates America’s 250th birthday.
Martin is currently a private assigned to the 1-19th Infantry Battalion, Bravo Company, 3rd Platoon. His unit assignment will change once he receives orders to his first duty station.
Martin’s path to service began early. He graduated high school a year ahead of schedule, enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17, and turned 18 while in basic training. His OSUT graduation is scheduled for July 1-2 at Fort Benning.
His next goal is to continue into Pre-RASP and then successfully complete the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program. After that, Martin hopes to attend Airborne School.
His family says they are incredibly proud of his commitment, discipline, and determination.
Martin also comes from a family with a strong connection to military service. He was born on the 86th birthday of his great-grandfather, retired Lt. Col. O.D. Steffey, and became his great-grandfather’s pride and joy. The two were able to celebrate O.D.’s 102nd birthday and Garett’s 16th birthday together before Steffey passed away in October 2024.
Martin’s stepfather, Brian Collier, also served in the Army National Guard for six years with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division.
As Martin prepares to graduate and take the next step in his Army career, his family and community celebrate not only his personal achievement, but also the continuation of a legacy of service, patriotism, and dedication.
His graduation during America’s 250th birthday week makes the occasion especially meaningful — a young soldier stepping into service as the nation reflects on 250 years of independence, sacrifice, and commitment to country.
