Community Rallies to Save Fort Clark’s Historic Cavalry Stables

One of Kinney County’s most iconic and fragile historic landmarks is at risk of being lost to time, and a grassroots effort is underway to save it. The Fort Clark Cavalry Stable needs urgent restoration. Local residents, volunteers, and equestrian users have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $15,000 to preserve this irreplaceable piece of American military history.
The historic stables were built in 1939, on the footprint of the original cavalry stables built in the 1870’s. The stables at Fort Clark once housed the horses of soldiers preparing for missions throughout the Southwest, and have been in almost continuous use for 85 years. Today, they stand as a powerful reminder of the role Fort Clark played in both Texas and U.S. military history. “This is more than a building. It’s a piece of living history,” said one of the campaign organizers. “It connects us to a time when cavalry units rode out from these very grounds.” The stables are still in use today, and available to rent.
The fundraising effort is focused on critical preservation work to prevent the structure from falling into irreversible disrepair. Planned improvements include:
• Full exterior painting to restore the original look
• Reconstruction of essential roof joists
• Restoration of 14 original horse stalls
• Preservation of stonework and tack room framing
• Recorded Texas Historic Landmark application
• Stabilizing the structure against further weather-related damage
Without these urgent repairs, organizers warn the building could become structurally unsalvageable. The stable, located within Fort Clark Springs, is open to the public and serves as a powerful educational site for school groups, historians, tourists, and local families. It offers a rare, tangible experience of Texas frontier life and U.S. military tradition—something few communities can still claim. “Kids come here and get to see, touch, and feel the history that’s otherwise just in books. But if we don’t act now, we may lose that opportunity forever,” a supporter shared. Organizers emphasize that immediate action is essential. Further weathering and decay could make future restoration far more difficult and costly. The GoFundMe campaign, titled "Save Fort Clark’s Historic Stable", is now live and accepting donations of any size.
Supporters are encouraged not only to donate, but to spread the word by sharing the campaign link with friends, fellow history lovers, and veteran communities. Every dollar goes directly toward materials, professional labor, and preservation resources.
