Jones Elementary Student, Joaquin Corona, Heads to Nationals for Geography Bee in Florida

by Annabell McNew

Jones Elementary is cheering on one of its brightest young minds this week as fourth-grader Joaquin Corona heads to the National Geography Bee in Florida. The school gave Joaquin a memorable send-off with a heartfelt clap-out, celebrating his remarkable achievement and wishing him the best of luck on his journey. Joaquin earned his spot at the national competition after placing first in his grade level at the regional championship held earlier this year in San Antonio.
A passionate geography enthusiast, Joaquin is known for his impressive knowledge of countries, capitals, and especially flags—which he enjoys sketching in his free time. His mother shared that his love for geography goes beyond the classroom, noting that “he learns about other countries for fun” and has always shown a deep interest in global cultures.
After discovering that the traditional school-based geography bees were no longer held, Joaquin’s family sought out new opportunities for him to pursue his interest. They found the National Geography Bee, organized by the International Academic Competitions, which offers students a chance to demonstrate their geographical knowledge through competitive exams and live quiz rounds. Joaquin qualified for the regional competition by passing a challenging online exam and went on to claim first place in San Antonio—securing his place among the country’s best young geographers at the national level.
The National Geography Bee tests students on a wide range of topics, including political, cultural, and physical geography from around the world. Top finishers at nationals will even have a chance to advance to the International Geography Championships. As Joaquin heads to Florida, his entire school and community are rallying behind him. Jones Elementary couldn’t be prouder to see one of their own compete on a national stage. Way to go, Joaquin—we’re all rooting for you!
