The Weekly Chirp: Northern Cardinal

by Alicia Christian

I want to point out one of the birds we see everyday, and somehow forget his beauty, his song and his spiritual connotation. I am talking about the Northern Cardinal. This bird is with us every day, every month and every season of every year! So, we see him all the time. And we humans are quite good at taking things for granted!
The males are a wonderful bright red with black markings and orange bill, and the females are more olive in color, have black markings and a bit more pink in the bill. Both have the noticeable crest.. Now, the chicks are downright hysterical!! They must grow into the giant mohawk adorning their heads!
Cardinals have a variety of beautiful melodies, each song signifies its own communication. Chances are, you hear these melodies every day, and thus they have become background noise. It is said that when you see a Cardinal, it is the soul of a lost loved one visiting with a message or memory.! Someone you really miss is checking in with you! So, take a moment to NOTICE the Northern Cardinal when you soon see him again.Try to block out everything else. LOOK at his exquisite color, the bright unmistakable lipstick red body, the intense black facial markings and the contrasting orange bill. STOP, really stop and listen. LISTEN to the variety of melodies in his song, so calming, yet so invigorating. Then wonder, wonder for a moment, who might be sending kind thoughts and love to you?
