The Weekly Chirp

by Alicia Christian

While traveling to New Mexico this past weekend, going north out of Sanderson, a Roadrunner darted in front of my car missing me with great precision. Why is it so very exciting to see a Roadrunner? Possibly because it is in view one moment and gone the next? Though these amazing birds cannot outrun a coyote, the Greater Roadrunner (a member of the Cuckoo family), can reach a speed of 20mph! They prefer to stay on the ground in open areas, but will fly short distances when provoked. They feed on insects, lizards and small birds using a surprise attack method and sometimes will beat their prey against the ground to render it unconscious. They also mate for life, an endearing behavior. I've seen them on many roads and trails throughout the Southwest. I often see them on Hwy 131 to Eagle Pass, as well as numerous locations on the Fort. I continue to be in awe of my brief sightings. They are fast, sleek, elegant and smart. In various indigenous cultures, seeing a Roadrunner will bring you good luck. Therefore, when I do see one, I always say “Thank You!!”
