About the Author:
My Christian name is Pollard Hickman Coates, IV. Quite a mouthful! Of course about the only time I got called that as a kid was when I was in trouble with my mom! My mom is the reason I began to write in earnest. She began to show signs of Alzheimer’s Dementia and had such a fragrant life. I began to compile stories about the area around Brackettville, Texas where she was raised as well as me. I wrote nearly every word of my stories sitting at the kitchen bar at our ranch called The Spanish Gourd Ranch eighteen miles north of Brackettville or Brackett as the locals call it. I am a father of two beautiful and loving children, Suzanne Leigh Coates Taylor and Pollard Hickman Coates, V or Cinco. I was blessed to be married to their mother, Lynda Light Coates for 48 years. Sadly she passed a year before my book was published. I also am blessed with a son in law, Dr. Keith Taylor and a daughter in law, Ashlea Haney Coates. My greatest accomplishment is my four grandchildren Tripp Taylor, Duval Taylor and their cousins Pollard Hickman Coates, VI who is called Six and his baby sister Eden Lynn Coates. Eden was born two days after her grandmother “Doe” gained her angel wings. What a blessing it is to have such a wonderful family! I was a Chief Tax Appraiser for twenty seven years. Prior to that I ranched an eleven thousand acre ranch in Bandera County near Medina, Texas. Right out of college I put my degree in finance to use working in a bank in Cedar Park, Texas and then in a Savings and Loan in Uvalde, Texas. My greatest vocational love is ranching. And now I am pleased to add published author to my highly diversified list of vocations. As my exceptional wife Lynda began to decline in health due to a grade three malignant brain tumor that she had at age thirty four that was miraculously cured she began to suffer from the long term effects of high dose radiation treatments she received. She developed a high grade antibiotic resistance infection in her skull and ultimately died on January 9, 2024. Approximately 4 years prior to her death I began to develop Parkinson’s Disease. Such a cruel disease to have when trying to care for an disabled wife. She had suffered several strokes and was paralyzed on her left side. Unable to care for her at home by myself she went into assisted care. I have been fighting Parkinson’s and have received treatment at Energy4Life in Park City, Utah. My symptoms were greatly diminished. I am also looking at several cutting edge treatments and or medications. I am much better than I was a year ago and hopefully will continue! I look forward to the future and remain grounded in the past!
