Harold Niels (H. N.) Bitter

Harold Niels (H. N.) Bitter passed from this life to be with his Lord February 14, 2025. He was born March 6, 1942, in Del Rio, TX, the son of Harold Niels and Doris Katherine Bruce Bitter of Brackettville, TX. He was a proud fourth generation resident of Brackettville starting with his great grandfather, Fredrich W. H. Bitter, who was a jailer in Brackettville in the late 1880’s. His grandfather Adolph A. Bitter who was a businessman and rancher and was in partnership with Niels Petersen in the Petersen General Store. And his father Harold Niels Bitter, a local rancher. He went to school in Brackettville until his senior year when his mother and stepfather moved to Kokomo, Indiana where he graduated. He served in the US Army from 1960-1962 and attended the University of Texas where he met his wife, Frances. He moved to Lake Jackson in 1965 and worked for Dow Chemical as an operator for 37 years before retiring in 2003.
H. N. loved life and felt God had blessed his life by giving him a strong family and a loving wife. He was a devoted Christian and a member of First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson where he loved singing in the choir. He began performing in plays at Brazosport Center Stages in 1989 and enjoyed acting in over 40 musicals and dramas. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a long-time member of the Greenwood Gun Club where he participated and led the Cowboy Action Shooting.
The Bitter family moved to Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville, Texas in 2019 and because of his love of history he began serving on the FCS Preservation Committee Board, FCS Historical Committee Board, and FCS Community Council Board. He and Frances became the worship song leaders at First United Methodist Church in Brackettville. His artistic juices returned by playing guitar and singing with various groups.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances Bitter, son David of Brackettville, and granddaughter, Harlow of Lake Jackson, TX.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Brackettville, TX March 22 at 1:00 p.m. The service will be streamed live at: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552393393571 and https://www.youtube.com/@fumcbrackettville1518/streams
Interment will follow during a private ceremony at Masonic Cemetery in Brackettville in the family plot.
