ON THIS DAY: AUGUST 28, 1944 Fort Clark Closes After 92 Years of Military Service

On August 28, 1944, Fort Clark officially closed as a United States Army post, ending more than 92 years of military service along Las Moras Creek.
Established in 1852, Fort Clark served as an important frontier and cavalry post and was home over the years to Buffalo Soldiers, the Black Seminole Indian Scouts and generations of U.S. Army troops.
Although its military chapter ended in 1944, much of the historic fort remains today. Fort Clark was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, recognizing the significance of the post and its surviving historic resources.
82 years later, Fort Clark remains an enduring part of Kinney County’s history and identity.
